The north Georgia city of Dahlonega has withdrawn its bid to host the state's Music Hall of Fame.

City officials and the North Georgia College & State University submitted a package in December to relocate the Macon-based attraction to the university's campus.

University spokeswoman Kate Maine told The Gainesville Times that it soon became clear that local officials could not meet the nearly $5 million financial commitment necessary for the project.

The state Legislature has said it will stop funding Georgia's music and sports halls of fame, which are both in Macon. State officials have sought bids from potential host communities.

Macon wants to keep the music hall and has submitted a five-year plan to make it financially self-sufficient. Athens, Dunwoody and Woodstock have also submitted bids.
