Republican State Representative Allen Peake says Democratic State Senator Robert Brown owes him an apology after suggesting a Democrat who recently switched parties to become a Republican is sympathetic to the Ku Klux Klan.

The two appeared on local television show on 13WMAZ in Macon to discuss a recent spate of party switching. Journalist Tom Crawford has covered Senate Minority Leader Brown for years and says the tone of his remarks isn’t unusual.

“I don’t think it’s going to cause him a lot of damage if any within his own caucus and I think it reflects a lot of the frustration Democrats feel.”

Crawford says Democrats are smarting from stinging electoral defeats in Georgia this year.

Brown’s KKK comments were directed at an unnamed former Democrat who was recently re-elected. So far nine Democratic state lawmakers have switched parties.
