Georgia Democratic Party chair Jane Kidd has decided not to run for a second term. Party spokesman Eric Gray says Kidd announced her decision in a letter to state committee members. A former state representative from Athens, Kidd was elected chair in January 2007.
The deadline for anyone interested in submitting an application to succeed Kidd is Dec. 16. The party's state committee members will vote on a new chair Jan. 29. Gray says one person, Mike Berlon, a lawyer in Gwinnett County, had submitted the paperwork as of Tuesday.
Georgia Labor Commissioner Mike Thurmond, who recently lost a bid for the U.S. Senate, has been mentioned as a possibility to succeed Kidd. He said Tuesday that he wished her well and that he hasn't made any decisions as to whether he would throw his name into the ring.
