The Certainteed Corporation wants to raise some pollution counts, while reducing others. It would increase emission of volatile organic compounds, or V-O-C’s, by about 25 tons a year. These compounds have often been associated with contamination of drinking water supplies.
However, Certainteed would also decrease its particle pollution by 36 tons a year. These particles are small droplets of a variety of chemicals. The changes would come from manufacturing more fiberglass products, while stopping another product line.
Nearby Athens residents have tried for years to get a reduction in the facility’s air pollution. The Environmental Protection Division has to approve the change.
