University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll B. Davis is retiring.

Davis told the state Board of Regents Thursday that he plans to leave his job at the end of his contract in June 2011.

He has served as head of the state's 35 public colleges and universities since 2006.

Davis said the retirement date fulfills his promise to the board that he would stay five years with the university system.

The board will launch a national search to find his replacement.
