A contractor has been chosen to build a new convention center and beach village on Jekyll Island.

The state-owned island’s Authority says Georgia-based Brasfield and Gorrie LLC will get the contract. The company out of Kennesaw says it can complete the project for $30.6 million -- which comes in about 16 percent less than the projected budget according to an Island official.

Construction is scheduled to begin in October and wrap up by early 2012.

Two hotels and retail buildings in the village will be built by other contractors.
