Authorities say they have begun questioning a former Army soldier accused of taking workers hostage yesterday at a Georgia military hospital before surrendering peacefully.

A spokesman at Fort Stewart says no one was hurt and no shots were fired during a brief standoff at Winn Army Community Hospital on the base--about 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

Military officials say the hostages were able to calm the gunman and keep him away from patients until he surrendered.

A senior commander at the base says the former soldier was seeking help for mental problems apparently tied to his past service.

Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River.
