Today officials broke ground on the first phase of the Cordele Inland Port. Officials say they worked on the project for seven years and hope it will spur economic growth in South Georgia. The new facility will serve as a manufacturing and distribution center for freight containers. It will have direct rail service to and from the Port of Savannah. Officials say the inland port is expected to reduce road congestion and will create thousands of jobs for locals. Operations could begin as early as October.
