A major employer is re-opening a south Georgia chicken processing plant.

Governor Sonny Perdue was on hand Wednesday to welcome production back to Pilgrim’s Pride in Douglas.

The Coffee County facility will employ as many as 1,400 workers.

Pilgrim’s Pride expects to open the plant by January 2011 and be at full production by next summer.

The company expects to contract with 160 local growers to supply the Douglas plant.

Briolers are a leading industry in the state.

Pilgrim’s Pride says in all, 3,700 jobs are connected to the plant, from its labor force to trucking operations and other ancillary operations.
