A bill that would create a database of the prescription drugs people are using passed the state senate Wednesday.
Its sponsor Republican Senator Earl Carter says pharmacists and doctors will be able to access the information to help prevent abuse of prescription medication.
“Ladies and Gentleman, prescription drug abuse is an epidemic in our society and particularly in the state of Georgia. In fact 30 percent of drug abuse nationwide is prescription drug abuse," says Carter.
Carter says 40 states already have this kind of program, and there’s been no security breech of the information, because the penalties are so steep.
