Federal officials are looking for a new company to build a 333-million dollar hospital at Fort Benning in Columbus.

Work on the new Martin Army Community Hospital stopped in February after complaints the Alabama construction company chosen for the contract had conflicts of interest. Now the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which oversees the project, is recommending it be awarded to another company.

Billy Birdwell is with the Corps.

“Some of the construction and contractor buildings, temporary buildings had been brought in and set up and site surveys were being done and plans were being finalized but we had not yet held a groundbreaking.”

When completed the new hospital will replace an aging 250-bed facility built more than 50 years ago.
