Hyundai may start building one of its SUV's at the new Kia plant in West Point, and that could mean more jobs.
Right now the Hyundai Santa Fe is built in Alabama. According to published reports, one parts supplier there says he is shutting down for three months while production shifts to the Kia plant in West Point.
Hyundai and Kia are sister companies. The Hyundai Santa fe and Kia Sorento share the same platform. West Point Mayor Drew Ferguson says he's heard no details, but does anticipate a second round of hiring.
"We have heard that Kia is considering a second line in the West Point facility. We do not know what that line will be. We don't even know that that's a definite, but we have certainly heard that they are considering that on a fairly quick time frame."
12-hundred people have been hired at the plant to build the Kia Sorento, and that number should double once the second shift is added. It is not known how many additional jobs the Hyundai move would create. Company officials would not confirm or deny their plans.
