An Augusta restaurateur is mounting an effort to change Georgia’s state bird from the brown thrasher to the Cornish chicken.

Chris Cunningham, president of the fried chicken restaurant Wifesaver, is spearheading the campaign, which has been dubbed “Flip the Birds”. Cunningham says the chicken deserves to be recognized because the poultry industry provides thousands of jobs and contributes billions of dollars to the state’s economy each year.

The campaign’s website, flipthebirds.com, lists a host of reasons the chicken should replace the brown thrasher as the state bird and asks supporters to fill out an online petition.
