Ethics reform at the state capitol is getting another boost with a proposal to change the make up and job of the ethics commission. Advocates say this is the best year to achieve true reform.

Rob Teilhet, a democrat running for Attorney General, wants the ethics commission to appointed by the supreme court rather than by lawmakers and he wants that commission to handle ethics complaints rather than lawmakers policing themselves.

It’s just the latest reform idea following the scandalous departure of former Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson.

Bill Bozart with Common Cause, a non partisan advocacy organization, has been working on ethics reform for years.

"In this business, you come back every year with your proposals, but you wait for a window of opportunity and that appears to have happened with this scandal," said Bozart.

Bozart hopes lawmakers will consider all the ethics bills as a package and get meaningful ethics laws in Georgia.
