The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has extended the season for food shrimpers through Jan. 18. The food shrimp season automatically closes Dec. 31 unless the department extends it.

The extension affects commercial trawling up to three miles offshore and individuals going after shrimp with cast nets and beach seines.

The Florida Times-Union reports that state biologists recommended the extension Monday after reviewing survey data on shrimp abundance and size. They also consulted with the state's Shrimp Advisory Panel, which includes shrimping industry representatives.
