Georgia House Republicans nominated David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) to replace outgoing House Speaker Glenn Richardson. The full House must vote in January.

In early November, Richardson – Georgia’s first GOP House Speaker since Reconstruction -- announced he would step down effective January 1, 2010, following a suicide attempt and allegations by his ex-wife of an affair with a lobbyist.

Meeting with fellow Republicans earlier this week, Richardson said he "should have died" when he tried to kill himself by taking prescription pills.

He said he became depressed after he realized he could not put his family back together after his divorce. In a speech Thursday in the chamber where he has presided for four years, Richardson said, "you're my family."

Candidates for House Speaker must win by a simple majority. Members vote by secret ballot. The GOP holds a 105-74 majority in the chamber.
