Cessna Aircraft plans to close its three plants in Columbus within 6 to 24 months.

Officials with the Wichita-based airplane maker delivered the news to its 300-plus workers there yesterday.

The west Georgia division of Cessna makes various parts that are sent to other plants for the construction of small business jets and general aviation aircraft.

It was only in August of last year that Cessna opened a $25 million plant in Columbus, announcing plans to create 150 jobs over five years. But the down economy has reversed course for the company.

At one time, Cessna employed as many as 600 people at the Columbus facilities.
