AJC: Rep. Deal Questions Obama’s Citizenship

In an interview with the AJC, Republican gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Representative Nathan Deal says he plans to write a letter to the president asking him to produce a birth certificate showing he was born in the United States.

Deal says he and other U.S. House members still have doubts despite the Obama campaign’s release of a digitally scanned image of the president’s birth certificate in June 2008. It shows he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on Aug. 4, 1961. Government officials in Hawaii have verified the document.

Other gubernatorial candidates don’t agree with Deal’s stance. Republican John Oxendine calls it “disrespectful.” Spokespersons for Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Roy Barnes says that it's “kooky” and “silly” behavior.

Republican Eric Johnson’s spokesperson says that they take the government of Hawaii at its word.
