A state chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference has broken away from the national organization. The Florida chapter of the SCLC has joined the newly-formed National Christian Leadership Conference. The SCLC was founded in Atlanta in 1957 by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Florida chapter’s breakaway highlights an ongoing rift between the chapter and the SCLC. Last month, former Florida president Sevell Brown III asked for a federal investigation into alleged criminal mishandling of funds by SCLC leadership.
