SAVANNAH, Ga.  —   Savannah-Chatham County police say an Army private has been charged with the slaying of a soldier whose body was found off a dirt road near the Savannah River.

Police Chief Michael Berkow said Thursday that 21-year-old Pvt. Sylvester Denmark Horton was charged with murder after police found the gun used in the killing in the soldier's car. Berko declined to give a motive.

The body of 21-year-old Army Spc. Necco (NEE-koh) McCraw was found last week by construction workers on Hutchinson Island, across the river from downtown Savannah.

Both soldiers served in the same unit at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah.

Horton's attorney, Jennifer Burns, said he denies any involvement in the slaying. A judge ordered Horton to be held without bond at his arraignment Wednesday.
