Midday Music Playlist for 08/28/2012

At the height of the Cold War, in 1958, American pianist Van Cliburn competed in the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Soviet Russia and won. The young Texan's electrifying victory earned him a Manhattan ticker tape parade, a spot atop the classical charts, and a new quadrennial piano competition named after him. Well, yesterday it was announced that Van Cliburn, now 78, has advanced bone cancer. Right after the one o'clock news we hear Van Cliburn play two short pieces by Rachmaninoff.
