Long ago, the Mongols attacked the city Chittor in western India. Centuries later, composer Albert Roussel visited the ruins of Chittor and, back in France during World War I, wrote an opera-ballet about the events that took place there. The premiere of "Padmavati" at the Paris Opera went well, but as the spectacle was too lavish to be revived often, Roussel preserved the best bits of music in a pair of orchestral suites. We hear a new recording during the 11 o'clock hour.
