Paganini asked Berlioz for a showpiece for viola. Berlioz drafted a sort of symphony for viola and orchestra. For Paganini, it wasn't virtuosic enough: "I should be playing all the time!" He turned it down. But after hearing its eventual premiere, Paganini was overwhelmed and sent Berlioz a check for 20,000 francs. We hear a new recording of that piece, "Harold in Italy," featuring violist David Aaron Carpenter.
