Republican State Representative Allen Peake filed a bill this week that would ban all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Peake’s proposal claims fetuses are capable of feeling pain at 20 weeks. The bill is called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. It does not ban abortions when the mother’s life is in danger.
Hours after a Senate attempt to undo an outgoing veto be ex-Gov. Sonny Perdue, the House on Thursday declined to back up its sister chamber, with its leader saying he prefers working with his current boss to picking a fight with his former one.
A racial rift has opened on Savannah City Council that could make it hard for a new chief executive to take the reigns in the port city. The divide is over the search for a new city manager. The Senate has unanimously voted to override a veto by former Gov. Sonny Perdue of legislation that would hold lawmakers to use a zero-based approach to a quarter of the budget each year. The state now operates under a continuous budget, where new spending programs approved by the General Assembly are automatically rolled over into the succeeding budget.
