Legislative Day 8 - January 25, 2012

Today is the 8th Legislative Day of the Georgia General Assembly.

At the Capitol, charter school supporters rallied for a Constitutional Amendment allowing state-sponsored charter schools. State charter schools were recently found unconstitutional by the Georgia Supreme Court. Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers and Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan both support the amendment.

House Speaker David Ralston says he wants to make it easier for small businesses to thrive in Georgia by looking into the way the state regulates business. He addressed the Small Business Development and Job Creation Committee.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Carol Hunstein delivered her third annual State of the Judiciary address to a joint session of the General Assembly. Chief Justice Hunstein says thousands of low–risk offenders should be placed into special accountability courts instead of prison.

Ed Bean of the Daily Report joined us for an analysis of Chief Justice Hunstein’s speech.

The State Budget is the only legislation the general assembly is required to pass every year.
