Legislative Day 6 - January 23, 2012

Today is the 6th Legislative Day of the Georgia General Assembly. It was a busy day in the Capitol following a week of budget briefings. They will not begin to tweet Governor Nathan Deal’s $19.2 billion dollar proposal.

Democrats proposed placing an income cap on recipients of the HOPE scholarship. In their proposal, families with combined incomes of $140,000 would no longer be eligible for the scholarship. Governor Nathan Deal opposes a cap. In its two decade history, the HOPE has always been a merit–based scholarship

We go in–depth into the budget process with the Chairmen of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, Rep. Terry England and Sen. Jack Hill.

Our roundtable of Capitol journalists, Kristina Torres of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Walter Jones of Morris News Service, put all of these issues into perspective.

You can watch Prime Time Lawmakers every night the Georgia General Assembly is in session at 7pm on Georgia Public Broadcasting. The program re-airs the next morning at 5:30am.
