Legislative Day 1 - January 9, 2012

Today is the 1st Legislative Day of the Georgia General Assembly. The Senate was busy on the first legislative day, granting final passage to two holdover bills from last year.

Senate Bill 184 prohibits local school boards from laying off teachers based on seniority alone; Senate Bill 38 gives the state school superintendent direct hiring and firing power. Currently that power lies with local school boards.

Opponents say the bills reduce local control. Both Education bills move to the Governor for his signature.

We begin our leadership interview series with House Speaker David Ralston who says criminal justice reform will be a big priority this year.

We welcome back Tom Crawford of the Georgia Report for a little analysis on this first day of the session.

You can watch Prime Time Lawmakers every night the Georgia General Assembly is in session at 7p.m. on Georgia Public Broadcasting. The program re-airs the next morning at 5:30 am.
