Day 5- January 25, 2010

Governor Sonny Perdue proposed more cuts in state spending during his address to the joint appropriations committee last week. Most agencies will be asked to reduce their budgets by 9%.  Lawmakers’ Valarie Edwards has the highlights and reaction to those proposed cuts.

In an exclusive interview with Lawmakers, House and Senate Appropriations Chairs agree that now is not the time for new taxes and say the film and tourism industries will create jobs in Georgia.  Nwandi Lawson talks with Representative Ben Harbin and Senator Jack Hill about what is sure to be a challenging budget year.

A joint House-Senate Ethics Committee talks about what steps need to be taken to restore public confidence after recent scandals under the gold dome.  Lawmakers’ Keocia Jackson takes a look at what some key players are saying about ethics reform this session.

As a part of the celebration of Lawmakers’ 40th season, we continue our Lawmakers Flashback series.  Tonight’s excerpt features a 1971 interview with Glenn W. Ellard, the Clerk of the House, about new electronic voting machines in the House chamber.
