Journey Out of Silence: The Heather Whitestone Story

Journey Out of Silence: The Heather Whitestone Story is the remarkable tale of Heather Whitestone McCallum, a beauty queen who was the first deaf Miss America title holder. Heather lost her hearing at a very young age from a severe virus. Undeterred, she taught herself to dance and won the pageant's preliminary talent competition by performing ballet en pointe to "Via Dolorosa" (Street of Sorrows). Growing up, she competed in many pageants and became Miss Alabama in 1994, the first deaf woman to win that title as well. Showcasing interviews with Heather's family and friends as well as celebrities such as Regis Philbin, Kathy Gifford, Phyllis George and Senator Bob Dole, Journey Out of Silence: The Heather Whitestone Story creates a portrait of a determined and talented young woman who overcame great odds in order to become Miss America in 1995.
