Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – The stress of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is taking a toll on an increasing number of military personnel. Mental health experts agree that early intervention is critical in cases of PTSD, but too many veterans are receiving inadequate care or none at all. Emory University is at the forefront of developing some new and effective ways to treat PTSD. Dr. J. Douglas Bremner, Professor of Psychiatry and Radiology at Emory and Director of Mental Health Research at the Atlanta Veterans Administration Medical Center, and Dr. Kerry Ressler, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Emory University School of Medicine, join us to discuss their work.
Biofuels – Alternative energy is big business these days and biofuels are receiving a lot of attention. While corn ethanol is the best-known biofuel, a group at Georgia Tech thinks other sources, including wheat stalks and other agricultural waste, fast-growing trees, such as poplar and willow, and several perennial energy crops, such as switch grass, can be much more productive and less devastating to the food chain. Dr. Arthur Ragauskas, Associate Professor, Georgia Tech School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, joins us to discuss the research.
