Heart Disease in Georgia – in this special episode we'll look at two aspects of heart disease in the state.

First: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming 750,000 lives each year. Although trends are getting better, gaps still remain, especially between the races. African-Americans are 29 percent more likely to die from heart disease than whites, and death rates from stroke are 40 percent higher for blacks than whites. Dr. Gary H. Gibbons and Dr. Elizabeth Ofili of theMorehouse School of Medicine join us to discuss why and what's being done about it.

Then: Given the typical Georgia diet and lifestyle, how can we keep our hearts healthy? Cardiologist Dr. Gina Lundberg and Julie Schwartz, an Emory dietician, give us some guidance. It may be easier than you think!
