Stem cell research – Scientists believe that stem cell research holds promise for those who suffer from degenerative diseases and that it may also help feed the world's growing population by enabling enhanced and disease resistant plants and animals. Is the promise real or is it hype? Joining us for a scientific discussion of the issue are Dr. Steven Stice, Director of UGA's Regenerative Bioscience Center, and David Dodd, former CEO of Serologicals Corporation. Also this week: Georgia's changing demographics – There is nothing more exciting to UGA demographer Doug Bachtel than census statistics. As information from the 2000 census and updates continue to be released, Bachtel reads them like tea-leaves to see how the state is changing and what impact those changes will have. He says Georgia is unique in many ways, which presents challenges and opportunities. He joins us to discuss his findings. Next week on Georgia Weekly: Private Cities – they are a hot topic in the Legislature. Florida loves them, but will be they good for Georgia? Gary Moyer, an expert, joins us to discuss the issue. Also next week: The Trauma Center Crisis – Emory's Dr. Kate Heilpern will explain the problems. |
