Poverty in Georgia – Georgia has more impoverished counties than any other state in the nation. Of course, we have more counties but we do sit in what's known as The Black Belt, an area of the South that is home to persistent poverty, poor employment, low incomes, low education, poor health and high infant mortality. In some parts of Georgia, 100% of the residents still live in persistent poverty. Joe Whorton, Director of UGA's Initiative on Poverty and the Economy, joins us to talk about the situation and possible remedies.

Heart Research – In recognition of Heart Month, we also look at some of the groundbreaking research into heart disease and treatment taking place in Georgia. The American Heart Association estimates that nearly 12 million Americans suffer from heart disease. It is the leading cause of death in the US. Perhaps even more alarming, recent statistics indicate that children are being diagnosed with high blood pressure, a disease associated only with adults in the past. Dr. Nic Chronos of St. Joseph's Research Institute in Atlanta and Dr. Gregory Harshfield, Director of the Georgia Prevention Institute at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, join us to discuss the trends and their work.
