Update on Georgia's Prisons – Georgia's prison population is now the sixth largest in the nation, with an annual budget of nearly $1 billion. Much of that growth has been fueled by mandatory minimum sentences for serious or violent crimes and tougher parole policies. With more than 48,000 people behind bars, about 98 percent of the state's prison beds are full. Department of Corrections Commissioner, James Donald, joins us to discuss the present situation and future plans and programs. What does it mean to be Southern? From seventeenth century Cavaliers and Uncle Tom's Cabin to Civil Rights museums and today's conflicts over the Confederate flag, Southern identity, while shifting and changing, has served to define the South as a region apart from the rest of America. James C. Cobb, the University of Georgia's B. Phinizy Spalding Distinguished Professor of History, joins us to discuss his acclaimed new book Away Down South: The History of Southern Identity, recently published by Oxford University Press. |
