Field Trip: Fort McAllister State Historic Park

Located on the Great Ogeechee River, these Confederate fortifications withstood repeated attacks until 1864, when they fell into the hands of Union General William T. Sherman during his March to the Sea. The National Park Service describes this site as "the home of the best preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy." You will be able to visit the Civil War Museum whose interior is designed to look like a 'bombproof' as well as exhibits and artifacts.
