Bernie Marcus

He is, perhaps, Georgia’s greatest entrepreneur. Fired from his job in 1978, Bernie Marcus and his partner founded Home Depot, which is now the second largest retailer in the US. On Home Depot’s opening day, most of the boxes on the store’s shelves were empty, and Marcus’s children handed out dollar bills to encourage shoppers to come into the store. After retiring from The Home Depot, Marcus donated $200 million to launch the Georgia Aquarium, which has transformed downtown Atlanta, and operates the Marcus Institute, which focuses on children and medical research. GRAMMY-Award winning guitar virtuoso Earl Klugh was signed to a major record deal at the age of 23. The Atlanta resident has recorded over 30 albums for EMI, Warner Brothers, Capitol Records and KOCH records, earned 12 career GRAMMY nominations, has toured internationally for over 30 years and annually produces his Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs featuring many of music’s biggest names, including Chris Botti and Roberta Flack. But with iTunes and illegal file sharing of music, the business has changed for many musicians. Now, Klugh is actively involved in his own management- making him an entrepreneur who has continued to reinvent his career through the challenges and changes of the music industry.Join Host Richard Warner as he talks with Earl Klugh on the next Georgia’s Business Enterprising Entrepreneurs.
