FRIDAY BLOG: Top teams will get tested in Week 7

by Brian Jones

It’s the seventh week of the high school football season and the region competition is heating up for all classifications.

In Class 4A, No. 1 Griffin will be on the road to take on No. 5 North Clayton, and the winner will take first place in Region 4. North Clayton will have a tough task taking down Griffin as they have the No. 2 offense and the No. 2 defense in Class 4A.

In Class 5A, Walton will take its undefeated record to face the Milton Eagles, who are 4-0 in Region 6. These two teams are in a four-way tie with Roswell and Lassiter for No. 1 in the region. Milton has not defeated Walton since 1994.

Another good region game will be the Winnersville Classic between Valdosta and Lowndes. One thing to note about this game is that the Vikings have won the last five games against Valdosta, but the Wildcats have won 33 of the 47 all-time meetings. The Wildcats will regain quarterback DeShay March, who suffered an injury during the game against Northside-Warner Robins.

Grayson, the new No. 1 team in Class 5A, will have another tough test when it faces Brookwood at Brookwood Community Stadium. Both teams are unbeaten in region play and the Broncos are looking to avenge their 10-7 loss against Grayson last season.

In Class 2A, No. 1 Calhoun will have its toughest test to date when the Yellow Jackets face also-undefeated Chattooga. The Yellow Jackets average 41 points per game on the strength of their quarterback Nash Nance and wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers, who make up probably the best quarterback-wide receiver duo in Georgia.
