Centennial hosts Northview in first GPB/Score Atlanta Game of the Week

by Brian Jones

In the opening full-weekend of the high school football season the GPB Game of the Week will feature to teams from Fulton County as the Northview Titans travel to Centennial to take on the Knights.

Northview is looking to get off to a good start in 2009 and they might have the players to do that with DL Denzel McCoy and DL Cameron Fordham. McCoy has gotten numerous offers from SEC and ACC schools while Fordham has committed to LSU. QB Kane Whitehurst is a junior and played some last year before suffering an injury to his collarbone.

Centennial is also looking to become a contender again after just missing the playoffs in '07. The Knights also have two Division I commits, OL David Yankey (Stanford) and CB Martin Jenkins (Clemson). In total, the Knights have 15 starters returning from last year’s squad, including LB Ben Carpenter who has gotten a handful of offers from Division 1 schools such as Ole Miss. QB Scott Laffler also returns to run the offense

Here’s some other games to keep an eye on this weekend:

St. Pius X vs. Marist – These teams always do battle in the beginning of the season.

Peachtree Ridge vs. Harrison – Harrison won 13-3 over the Lions in 2008.

M.L. King vs. SW Dekalb – The Panthers are a favorite to win the Class 4A state title and M.L. King is a top team in 5A.

Prattville (Ala.) vs. North Gwinnett – This game will be on Saturday and it will be one of two games played at North Gwinnett that day (the other is Byrnes, S.C. vs. Central Gwinnett). The Bulldogs reached the third round of the playoffs while Prattville is the three-time defending state champion in Alabama.
