Chemistry Matters is a new digital series for high school chemistry that supports STEM objectives.

Chemistry Matters provides a thorough summary of the concepts of chemistry, grounded in the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for science. It is designed to help students who struggle with the concepts of chemistry and to provide resources for teachers of all levels, especially those who may be teaching chemistry for the first time. The series is meant to be a comprehensive resource for students and teachers, but it is important that students actually carry out all the investigations and gain experience through practicing calculations in order to learn chemistry thoroughly.

More about the series:

  • There are 12 units that are divided in segments, designed to teach chemistry concepts and laboratory techniques.
  • Segments provide opportunities for teachers to stop the video and conduct labs and assignments with the students in their classroom. This format allows students to experience chemistry, not simply watch the videos. Chemistry Matters is a tool for education, not a replacement for laboratory work.
  • Some segments have "Closer Look" videos in the support materials section. These videos provide in-depth, guided instruction and practice on important chemistry concepts.
  • Science and Engineering Practices are introduced in Unit 1 and are represented by symbolic icons on screen throughout the series.
  • Crosscutting Concepts are introduced in Unit 2 and are represented by symbolic icons on screen throughout the series.
  • The host will often mention the Chemistry Matters Toolkit. The toolkit is located under each video segment where you can find laboratory instruction sheets, as well as practice problems for some of the chemical calculations embedded in the series.
