DTV FAQ's
JUST THE FACTS
What is the difference between Digital TV and Analog TV?
- Analog TV has been used for over 50 years as the standard broadcast technology. Analog TV uses varying radio waves which can fluctuate and affect picture quality. TV stations using analog can only transmit one channel at a time. Digital TV, on the other hand, uses binary code, like computers, to send signals more efficiently. DTV offers better picture and sound quality and has great potential for more programming options, as it allows stations to broadcast more than one channel at a time.
Why is the transition occurring?
- The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 requires full power television stations to switch to digital broadcasting. DTV allows TV stations to provide clearer picture and better sound. Also, using DTV, stations can broadcast more than one channel at a time through multicasting. By switching to DTV, airwaves will be cleared up for public-safety uses and entrepreneurs.
When will analog broadcasting end?
- Analog broadcasting will end February 17, 2009.
Will my TV still work?
- If your TV is equipped with a digital tuner or if you subscribe to cable, satellite or other pay TV service, you will not be affected. However, if you watch TV for free using an antenna, you have a few options:
- Get a digital converter box for your current TV
- But a TV with a built in digital tuner
- Subscribe to a pay TV service.
If you decide to buy a new TV, check out www.mygreenelectronics.org for information on how to recycle your old TV.
Is HDTV the same thing as Digital TV?
- No. HDTV and DTV are not the same thing. If you have a High Definition Television (HDTV), you may still need a converter box. Some digital TVs, even those that are "HD Ready" do not include a built-in digital tuner. Check your TV’s label to see if it is equipped with a digital or ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) tuner. If your TV is labeled "Integrated HDTV" or "HD Built-In", it should have a built-in digital tuner.
What is a digital converter box?
- A digital converter box is a device that can be hooked up to your analog television and your antennae. The box converts digital signals so that your analog TV can receive them. A digital converter box may also be called a set-top converter box, a digital-to-analog converter, a digital TV adapter or a digital set-top box.
How much do converter boxes cost?
- Most converter boxes cost between $40 and $80. However, each household is eligible to receive two coupons that will cover the cost of a basic converter box.
How do I apply for a coupon for a converter box?
- You can apply for the coupons by visiting www.DTV2009.gov or by calling 1-888-388-2009
Where can I buy a converter box?
- Converter boxes are available wherever electronics are sold; national chains include: Best Buy, Circuit City, Kmart, Radio Shack, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart. Coupons are only redeemable for converter boxes and cannot be combined.
Are some converter boxes better than others?
- Consumer reports has tested converter boxes that are currently available. Their ratings can be seen here: Consumer Reports
Do I need a new antenna to receive digital TV?
- If you currently use an antenna to receive analog TV, the same antenna should give you the same quality DTV after the transition. However, some TV stations may move to a frequency band that will require you to get a different type of antenna. It is wise to get an antenna that will receive different types of frequencies. You can visit www.antennaweb.org to determine which kind of antenna you need.
