For decades scientists have suspected dolphins have a complex vocabulary, but very little research on dolphin language has been done in the wild. Now, Liz Hawkins, a young PhD student, has turned the scientific world on its ear with her recordings. Using the latest software, Hawkins matches individual dolphin whistles to behavior. She has identified more than 70 distinct whistles and sounds, many more than have ever been recorded before. In Dolphins - The Code Breaker, Hawkins tracks dolphin pods through the waters around Cape Byron and southern Australia using a variety of watercraft to immerse herself among the enigmatic creatures.
