State Health Department Confirms First Vaping-Related Death In Georgia

A Georgia man has died of lung illness related to vaping nicotine, the Georgia Department of Public Health said Wednesday. His is one of nine cases the state is investigating.

According to the latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 805 cases have been reported in 46 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The CDC has confirmed 12 deaths, in 10 states. Nearly three-quarters of cases are male and 83% are under the age of 35, out of the 373 cases for which the CDC has complete data.

Georgia Tech Men's Basketball Slapped With Postseason Ban And Probation

Georgia Tech men's basketball team has been banned from 2019-20 post season play. The NCAA Committee on Infractions announced Thursday.

The decisions came after the committee found Georgia Tech allowed two boosters to interact with student athletes, which later led to violations.

“The university permitted these outside individuals to interact with their student-athletes,” the committee said in a press release.

Clinical Trial Opportunities For Cancer Patients Expanding In Rural And Minority Communities

The Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University has been awarded a six-year, $6 million grant from the National Cancer Institute for a program that will improve access to innovative clinical trials in rural and minority communities across the state.

The money will be used to recruit patients for clinical trials and cancer care delivery studies in areas around Albany, Athens, Augusta and Atlanta. Plans call for expanding the program into rural areas of South Georgia as well. Participating patients will receive “standard of care” chemotherapy, and the additional benefit of treatments that could be more beneficial in the future.
