To characterize this past weekend’s Prep football schedule as unusual would be a giant understatement in more ways than one. Hurricane Mathew visited the coastal and southern sections of the state on Friday and Saturday and again played havoc with prep football games scheduled in that area. In addition to that unwanted guest named Mathew, many games that were played in other areas of the state, ended with some shocking results.

Lee County took down former number one Houston County in a key Region 1- AAAAAA matchup, 55-29. The Trojans served notice that they are in fact one of the teams to beat in Class 6-A. The Valdosta Wildcats from that same powerful region downed favored Northside-Warner Robins 14-6. The fifth-ranked Cats will move up in the polls this week after downing the Eagles who came into the game ranked number one or two in all of last week’s prep polls.

Dodge County of Eastman topped formerly unbeaten Dublin in Class 3-AA, 28-21 in a middle Georgia game and McEachern came from behind to top North Cobb, 17-10 in a Class 7-A game of note. Class AAAAAAA’s top team, the Roswell Hornets, rolled past top ten foe, the Lassister Trojans, 45-14. In other games of interest, Thomas County Central beat Warner Robins 33-22, Twiggs County tossed a shutout at Stratford of Macon, 21-0 and Emanuel County Institute continued their winning ways with a 55-0 win over Region foe Wheeler County.

The Prep schedule this week is again altered due to Hurricane Mathew. Games were re-scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of this week to make up some of the missed games from last week and yet others on this week’s schedule are now moved to Saturday since several will play in those early week games of importance. In makeup games due to Hurricane Mathew, Pierce County plays at Brantley County on Monday and then Tuesday finds Effingham County at Glynn Academy, McIntosh Academy at Portal, Southeast Bulloch at Johnson of Savannah, Windsor Forest at Savannah High School and then last week’s schedule concludes with Glenn Hills meeting Laney of Augusta on Wednesday.

In regularly scheduled games of importance this weekend, Archer will play at powerful Grayson, Region 1-AAAAAAA swings back into action as Colquitt County hosts Camden County, and Tift County travels to meet resurgent Lowndes, now 6-1 on the season after opening the year with a loss to cross town rival Valdosta. Lee County hits the road with another tough 1-AAAAAA assignment meeting Northside-Warner Robins in Warner Robins. Houston County, 6-1, tries to rebound from last week’s loss at Leesburg with another tough road game at 4-2 Coffee High School in Douglas.

The number one ranked team in Class AAAA, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes, meet tough Sandy Creek on the road, Baldwin travels to play the Thomson Bulldogs in the Brickyard in Thomson, Berrien is at number two-ranked Fitzgerald in a Class AA match, Liberty County is at Appling County in Class AAA, and Clinch County meets Turner County in a key Region 2-A game.
