Food for thought:

“It’s not like we’ve gone against average football teams.” –Rush Propst on the Packers 0-2 start to the season.

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, the Packers are the defending 6A state champions, but with re-classification taking effect this season, they are now in class 7A. If you ask me… that’s too many As.

It was announced this morning that one of the highly anticipated matchups for tonight, Colquitt County vs. Tucker High, has been postponed to tomorrow (Saturday September 3) at 3:00 PM due to the severe weather that’s expected to roll through parts of Georgia, specifically in the south.

The threat of possible tornados due to Hermine are expected to hit parts of Georgia and as you can imagine, it’s not safe to play football (or travel for it) in the middle of a tornado.

When I called head coach Rush Propst on Thursday afternoon, the game was still on. The change came early Friday morning. I called Bryan Lamar to see how that affected his teams travel schedule.

He said they had planned to leave Friday morning for the 3-plus hours drive to Moultrie, but now they will just leave on Saturday morning.

This game has all the making of being a fantastic battle. To Coach Propst’s point, their first two games have been against two top 25 teams: Mill Creek and American Heritage out of Florida.

One of the biggest adjustments for the Packers this season was going to be at the quarterback position. Former Packer Chase Parrish led the team to two state championship titles and zero losses. It’s really unfair to ask Saunders to step in and match that expectation level.

But make no mistake about it: the season may not have started the way Jay wanted it to, but this is his team. He has learned from Chase Parrish for the last two years.

Rush Propst says he’s earned it and he deserves it, but it will take time to get his feet underneath him. He’s been challenged against amazingly talented ball clubs. I mean… these aren’t peewee football games we’re talking about here.

In fact, Propst believes he faced the toughest secondary he’s ever seen in their game last week against American Heritage. “Their secondary is especially the best secondary I’ve ever gone against ever,” he said.

So take that for what it’s worth.

Propst also mentioned that his offense strugged in the red zone. That can’t happen on Saturday when they welcome the Tucker Tigers to town.

Head Coach of the Tigers, Bryan Lamar has some serious standout talent on defense:
-DE Antonio Showers (led team in tackles last year), who’s only a junior
-DE Aaron Sterling, who’s committed to Alabama, 6-2, 260 pounds

These two bookends are tough. Jay Saunders is good at scrambling and he might be doing a lot of it if Showers and Sterling get rolling.

We will be broadcasting several games all across the state of Georgia tonight on GPB starting at 7:30 PM!
