Two of Georgia’s top football teams fell to out-of-state opponents this past weekend. Former number-one ranked Grayson fell to IMG Academy of Bradenton, Florida on Saturday 26-7, while former number-six ranked Colquitt County fell to American Heritage of Plantation, Florida 17-14, on Saturday night in Moultrie. Grayson and Colquitt County will both remain in most top ten polls this week across the state despite the losses.

The perennial power in Class AAA, Calhoun, fell to Dalton 28-13, a team which Yellow Jacket head Coach Hal Lamb termed the best Catamount team they had faced in ten years. In other games, Glynn Academy topped Ware County in Waycross 17-10, while Pace Academy topped West Forsyth 20-10 in another key game in week two of the regular season.

Tift County rolled to their second win of the young season, a 56-14 triumph over Cook of Adel. The Blue devils opened the season with a 41-0 whitewash of South Effingham and served notice statewide that they will be a factor in the Region 1-AAAAAAA race in 2016. Other games across the state saw Blessed Trinity top Marietta 25-14, Vidalia down Appling County 24-20, Lovett beat Marist 29-28, and Lee County top Bainbridge 29-12.

Heading into week three there are some new faces on the horizon and many of the old guard are still in a position to control their destiny near playoff time.

There were some early-season border wars played last weekend. Thomas County Central edged Thomasville 16-14, Bowdon beat Bremen 20-14, Hawkinsville topped Bleckley County 21-14, and Green County captured its first win over Morgan County in ten years of play 13-12.

Week three finds some interesting matchups: Benedictine travels to play St. Pius X in metro Atlanta, Brooks County is on the road to play at defending Class A Public Champion Clinch County. Cartersville, the top-rated Class AAAA team travels to Calhoun. Grayson tries to rebound from their opening game loss with a visit to top ten foe McEachern. Lowndes makes the long trip from Valdosta to take on Parkview, while Valdosta High renews an old rivalry with a game against Wayne County in Jesup.

Other games of note across the state finds North Gwinnett at Hillgrove, Burke County at Washington County, Brookwood at South Gwinnett and Dacula at Mill Creek. In traditional rivalry games this week, it’s Thomas County Central at Cairo, Coffee at Ware County and Seminole County at Early County.

The weather is beginning to cool down a bit and the Prep Football action is beginning to heat up all across the state.
