The Harrison High School boys golf team is once again striding down fairways and charging after birdies as they get ready for the GHSA State Championships May 18 at the Sunset Country Club in Moultrie, Georgia. Coach Dennis Attaway is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hoyas and this year’s team is loaded with talent. “Senior Sam Maryland and Junior Luke Schniederjans play one-two and have done an outstanding job this year. Nick Bell, Chad Barfield, Will Leanos and Zach Womack have also played very well for us this year," Coach Attaway said. The Hoyas started the season with a win at the two-day North Georgia Invitational at Barnsley Gardens. They wrapped up the season in similar fashion, emerging victorious at another two-day event: the Billy Peake Invitational. This tournament boasted an outstanding field with eight teams who finished in the top five at last year’s state championships along with two defending state champs: Peachtree Ridge and Marist. The Hoyas trailed by a whopping 15 shots after the first day, but turned on the after burners, hit fairways and greens. Thanks to a blizzard of birdies, teh team made up that deficit to win the tournament. The Hoyas have a great pedigree in high school golf, winning the state title three times in 2002, 2008 and 2010. Coach Attaway shared what it would mean to win the boy’s title this year. “It would be quite an honor. The boys tournament is such a strong field that 14 of the 16 teams have a great shot at winning it all. If we come out on top, that would be an honor." The Hoyas girls team is also having an outstanding season posting an 8-1 record in dual matches. Hailey Willman, Ana Garcia, Caroline McLeod, and Jordan Abbott lead the way. The Lady Hoyas won a state title in 2000 and they hope to add another this year to the Harrison High School trophy case. So congratulations to the Harrison Hoyas Boys and Girls golf teams, and best of luck in the state finals.
