The Taylor County Lady Viking basketball team is undefeated, 30-0, heading into Thursday’s Class A Public division title matchup with the Turner County Lady Rebels who come into the game at 28-2. Taylor County, located between Columbus and Macon in the mid-state area, is no stranger to the annual championship trek to the Macon Centreplex. Since 1968 the Lady Vikings have captured ten classification titles and have been the runner-up an additional three times.

Over the past 36 years, Coach Matt Troutman has coached his basketball teams from the small community of Butler to a record of 850 wins and 175 losses. He can claim five state titles during his tenure and three unbeaten seasons as well. When one takes a look at this year’s unbeaten team there is one thing that stands out -- the margins of victory are eye opening. Final scores such as 80-34, 68-12, 87-9 and 55-20 are quite common through this thirty-game winning streak which includes wins of 57-30 over Greenville in round one of the state tourney, followed by a 69-42 win over Treutlen in the quarterfinals, and a 59-43 semi-final win over a tough Terrell County squad.

Turner County’s last appearance in the state finals was back in 2000, but this is a well-traveled group that will meet Taylor County on Thursday at 3 P.M. to open this year’s tournament. The Lady Rebels have a couple of impressive eleven and fourteen game winning streaks sandwiched between their two losses this season and are looking forward to meeting the Lady Vikings.
The two teams are a combined 58-2 on the season. A championship caliber game is on tap for the GHSA Class A Public girls division on Thursday afternoon in the Macon Centreplex. The game tips off at 3:00 PM on GPB-TV.
