I can’t remember the last time Class AA had so few undefeated teams at the mid-point in a football season. Heading into this week’s action there are five...count them...five unbeaten teams in one of the toughest classifications in the state. The five remaining unbeaten teams are: Greater Atlanta Christian 4-0, Fitzgerald 4-0, Vidalia 4-0, Screven County 4-0; and Model 4-0. Since there are only five undefeated teams out of 58 teams in the classification, does this mean that parity has finally engulfed the black and blue division of Georgia high school football?

The Lovett Lions, defending Class AA champions, currently sit at No. 5 in this week’s top ten poll and already have two losses on the season. Two defeats have also been suffered by perennial power Brooks County out of always tough Region 1-AA. By comparison, Class AAA is loaded with unbeaten teams this week. Nine of the top ten ranked teams in that division are unbeaten.

Class Single A’s top ten looks like a carbon copy of Class AAA, with nine of the top ten teams unbeaten at mid-season. The defending Class A private school champions, Aquinas of Augusta remain the No. 1 team in the division at mid-season, followed closely by the defending public school Class A title holder, Marion County at No. 2. There are other possible Class A private and public champions in every corner of the state in this division with Pacelli from Columbus at 4-0, Savannah Christian and Calvary Day from Savannah, both at 4-0 and Mount Paran Christian from Atlanta the early season favorites to challenge Aquinas. In the public division, last season’s runner up, Charlton County is off to a great start this year at 4-0, while Hawkinsville, 4-0 in the mid-state and Irwin County in the southern portion of the state could challenge Marion County for the Class A public trophy.

Class AAAAAA Lee County, 3-0 on the season, is the only team out of Region 1-AAAAAA in action this week. The other teams in that league, Colquitt County, Camden County, Lowndes, Valdosta and Tift County all 5-0 on the season take the week off to prepare for a tough title run over the next five weeks. The Region 1-AAAAAA record heading into this week’s action is 28-0 and Lee County is a heavy favorite over Mitchell County. Four Region 1-AAAAAA teams are in the top ten this week and Tift County is knocking on the door.

Prep football championship runs are heating up all across the state!
