Andrew Ng & Daphne Koller created Coursera to Literally Change the World of Higher Learning

Supply & Demand meet technology. It is the current state of higher education in America – online or digital learning.

The demand for higher education is growing rapidly in a worldwide economy based upon the “Digital Age”. The supply of content, or course offerings, has never been higher. The technology to marry supply and demand has never been better.

Some of the most well respected names in Higher Learning are now offering courses for free.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers almost 3-dozen free courses including subjects like Physics I to Fundamentals of Biology to Electricity & Magnetism.

Harvard offers seven free online courses from Justice to Quantitative Methods in Clinical & Public Health Research.

Georgia Tech recently joined a list of 62 prestigious Universities and Colleges around the U.S. offering 341 free online courses through a company called Coursera.

According to the Coursera website the company envisions a much different world of higher education. “We are a social entrepreneurship company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. We envision a future where the top universities are educating not only thousands of students, but millions. Our technology enables the best professors to teach tens or hundreds of thousands of students.

Through this, we hope to give everyone access to the world-class education that has so far been available only to a select few. We want to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.”
