According to the National Center for Women & Information Technology, women earn 57% of all undergraduate degrees, but only 18% of those degrees are in computer and information science. What can we do to fix it? One simple solution is to provide encouragement and expose girls to opportunities that involve coding. For younger girls, you can start by downloading the free PBS KIDS ScratchJr App that targets children ages 5-8.

For older girls, particularly juniors and seniors getting ready to enter college and select occupations, you can sign them up for the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program. This free seven-week camp introduces girls to computer science and the advantages that accompany a career in this field. Each week consists of a project designed to teach girls about a different facet of coding. They will meet dynamic guest speakers, go on field trips, and engage in hands-on workshops. At the end of the program they will present a final project to their class using the information they learned during camp.

Applications are being accepted until March 1, 2016. Experience is not a requirement and need-based scholarships are available. Click here for more information.
